Last week’s photo challenge was a toughie. But Diane Bosch, Morley Boyd and Edward Bloch nailed it. Lynn U. Miller’s image showed part of the engine order telegraph that’s stood near Sconset Square — between Blue Lemon and the Post Road — for nearly 3 decades.
An engine order telegraph is used by a pilot on a ship’s bridge, to order engineers down below to power the vessel at a desired speed. Diane noted that this particular device was salvaged from the tugboat Celtic, which sank suddenly off Sheffield Island in 1984.

That weathervane is on 1 Canal Street, the Westport Public Schools District Facilities Office building. I pass it often.
Yes! Congratulations! Old-time Westporters know this as the former Bridgeport Hydraulic building. It’s at the light, where Kings Highway North meets Canal Street.
I think it’s the weather vane at Compo Marina Basin.
… Or the Parks and Rec building inside Longshore.
Gee — I just passed it ten minutes ago, and didn’t even notice it!
Police station?
Nope — as noted above, it’s the Westport Public Schools District facilities office building — the former Bridgeport Hydraulic building at the light, where Kings Highway North meets Canal Street. Next to “Fort Apache,” for those who still call the medical complex near Wilton Road by that name!
On top of the dome of the roof of what used to be the “Carousel Toy Store” in Sconset Square.
