Westport RadioShack Avoids Axe

Wikipedia is brutal — but truthful. Here’s the 1st line for its entry on RadioShack:

“RadioShack Corporation (formerly Tandy Corporation) is a bankrupt American electronics retail franchise.”

There are 5,000 stores worldwide. Within 2 months, 1784 of them — 1/3 of the total — will be closed.

Westport’s will remain. At least, it’s not on a 22-page list available online.

That makes it a rarity. RadioShacks in Fairfield, Norwalk, Stamford, Trumbull, Cos Cob, Hamden and Orange are all on the shuttered list.

    Radio Shack in Westport is a memory-rich place. I believe it is where I first used an electronic calculator, and I had my share of Realistic appliances. If I am recalling correctly the current location is actually a couple of stores down from where the used to be, at the end of the plaza.

    Unfortunately the list is unreadable. Is Wallingford on it?

        Thank you for letting me know that, Dan. I agree with Fred Cantor, and I have supported small businesses starting such as early as my high school years and have continuously done so throughout my life. Yes, I buy a few things online, but I, too, make a conscious decision to shop locally at the small businesses. I do not patronize big box stores.

    It’s a shame. The Internet is killing many retail outlets.

      Bobbie: similar to those famous last lines in the movie, “King Kong,” it’s not the Internet that’s killing many retail outlets. It’s consumers changing their patterns of how and where they buy various goods.

      Yes, I do buy at times online. But I also make a conscious effort to patronize local merchants (including Radio Shack), even in situations where it might be somewhat more expensive because I do want those stores to stay in business, for a variety of reasons.

    It looks like my local Shack in Clifton Park, NY is also staying open, which is welcome news since I can get free lifetime replacements on the iphone charge chords I buy there.
