CNN Money has come out with its annual list of the 50 Best Small Towns in the US.
Westport is not on the list.
Three Connecticut towns are — Brookfield is #26, Cheshire’s 39 and Simsbury squeaks in at 50 — while the absolute bestest place to live in the entire country is (of course!) Sharon, Massachusetts.
We did not crack the Top 10 Earning Towns, either. Scarsdale, New York is #1, while Weston is 2 and New Canaan 5.
BUT…
No other place in New England — and only 7 other towns in the country — can boast they’ve got a bunch of 12-year-olds battling for a world championship.
That’s a lot of pressure on these kids — bringing home the bacon their CNN Money-reading parents couldn’t provide.
Go get ’em, guys.
Take that, Sharon and Scarsdale.
And especially you, Weston and New Canaan.

People like me who gew up in Westport and whose roots go back 110 years in this town may feel a little different towards CNN’s list. The unique thing I’ve found is that once a Westporter, always a Westporter. I haven’t lived in Westport for two decades, but I’m a Westporter through-and-through! I have my own Annual List and the number one small town on that list is Westport, CT. As a matter of fact, Westport has been the number one town for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been around a lot longer than CNN has!
How fantastic for those kids! No matter the results this is a story these boys will have for the rest of their lives! Way better than a skewed CNN ranking- You can manipulate with statistics but not with a trip to the LLWS! Play Ball!
With all due respect to CNN Money, how could it pick a town that’s not even on the water as the best small town in America? People love visiting or living in coastal communities for good reason.
Quite frankly, I had never heard heard of Sharon until reading this post today. Maybe it has a lovely public country club, or an award-winning high school theater program, or a free outdoor summer entertainment series, or……
As far as I am concerned, take any town like New Canaan, Darien, Greenwich, Fairfield, Westport, Weston and you can make a case for each being number 1. CNN just trying to take attention off of Fairfield County because let’s face it, we get a lot of publicity.
Let us not forget, do any of those places have a 06880dan Woog … I think not ….game set match bye bye $$$Cnn you mean nothing to us who grew up here live here or know about the meaning of small town…
Our team played a fantastic first round game at the World Series Little League in Williamsport, Pa. Westport is not all about money….cause who can put a price on their win???
I think Trumbull won the Little League World Series back in 1988, if I remember correctly. I think they beat Taiwan for the title. One of the team’s players was named Drury who went on to play for the NHL. There was a tremendous amount of pride in Trumbull after that stunning win. It may have been the first time a US team had gone all the way!
Fairfield American Little League went 2 years ago and last year.
