Remembering Gaspar Veloso

Gaspar Veloso was a familiar face to post office patrons.

Gaspar Veloso

A Vietnam veteran who joined the US Postal Service in 1973, he spent many years at the Westport and Saugatuck stations, before moving to Weston.

There, he created and tended glorious flower beds — inside and out — that made the post office not just a place, but a home.

Sarah Gross — one of his many fans — calls him “a tender, familiar, constant spirit.”

She says that until April 11, he never once called in sick.

That morning, he did.

He died later that day.

A display at the Weston post office honors his memory.

His beloved perennials will honor it too.
