When a director can’t direct a show, the associate director usually steps in.
For Staples Players director David Roth tonight, that was impossible. Associate director Kerry Long is his wife — and she was giving birth to their 1st child.
Oh, yeah — this was opening night for the Players’ production of “Guys and Dolls.”
Players president Caley Beretta stepped into the breach. All day long, she rallied the cast and crew. They took care of the zillions of last-minute details that needed to be done. They pulled together, as a true company should. When the curtain rose, Caley was directing.
And — 17 minutes after the opening notes of the Overture began — Kerry gave birth.
Lucy Roth is a true drama queen. In her 1st minutes on earth, she upstaged her very theatrical parents.

Congratulations, Kerry and David, and welcome to Lucy! The show was amazing tonight, you would’ve been proud. But the best entrance this evening was that of your beautiful little girl!
It seems a Double Debut was in order for Lucky Friday the 13th!
I SO hope that the time stamp on little Lucy Roth’s birth certificate says, “17 minutes past curtain.”
The cast and crew are to be hugely commended! The way they performed the duties and tasks associated with presenting for a nearly sold out house, a gi-normous musical in standard fare – standard for Staples Players, that is – was remarkable! They did so under the direction/leadership of Caley, along with student officers Tucker, Dan, Maya, and stage manager, Elana. And the show was great, too!

As one of the proud new grandfathers, I agree that Kerry and David truly have a gift for drama. And passing it along, there lovely new daughter, Lucy, came into the world singing a familiar song to every parent- “I want to be the star of this show.” And she was! Bravo to all the players, Lucy included.
