Johanna Rossi Turns New York Purple

Johanna Rossi is a senior hedge fund trader.

She’s one of the top women on Wall Street. And she’s doing all she can to change that.

Not that she wants to lose her position. She just wants other women to join her.

In her spare time, the Westporter is a leader of Securities Traders Association of New York — Women in Finance.

Last year, Johanna asked the Durst Organization to shine a light on International Women’s Day. The real estate giant quickly agreed to light One World Trade Center purple.

This year — thanks again to Johanna — Durst is adding purple lights to One Bryant Park and nearby 4 Times Square.

In addition, Durst is allowing STANY-WIF to use the coveted Spire app. It allows users to change the color of spires from their cellphones.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #PressForProgress. The goal is to “motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.”

It’s something Johanna Rossi has been doing for years.

On International Women’s Day 2016, Johanna Rossi helped ring the NASDAQ bell to celebrate gender equality.

Westporters Ring The Bell For Wounded Vets

Ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange is a great tradition. Many times, the honor goes to business executives, politicians, sports idols or movie stars.

Today the bell was rung by real heroes.

Catch a Lift Fund — the organization that provides wounded veterans with gym equipment and memberships — did the honors. And when they were done, the entire floor gave the vets a rousing ovation.

Catch a Lift has a strong Westport presence. So it was quite appropriate that — flanking 2 veterans this morning — were Westporters Adam Vengrow and Andrew Berman. Both have done yeoman’s work here — and nationally — for the cause.

After the event, 6 Westport volunteers posed for a group hug.

Metro-North Fire: “06880” Readers Help Each Other

The fire that disrupted last night’s Metro-North commute played havoc again today. Delays may continue for 24-48 hours.

Train riders have tried many alternatives. If you’ve got a solution — or want to offer, or seek, riders for your drive to and/or from work — click “Comments” below.

If appropriate, please offer “06880” readers a way to contact you.

And as always, mind the gap.

Oh My 06880 — Photo Challenge #58

Once again, “06880” readers prove there is no nook or cranny of Westport they don’t recognize.

Last week’s photo challenge — a stone lion — took us to the furthest corner of town. As 8 of you knew, it’s 1 of 2 statues on Beachside Avenue, a few feet from the Southport line. They stand at the driveway entrance to Mortimer and Mimi Levitt’s home. (To see the photo and all the guesses, click here.)

Congratulations to Robie Spector, Rich Stein, Wendy Cusick, Sandy Soennichsen, Dan Aron, Joyce Barnhart, Seth Braunstein and Bobbie Herman, for knowing all your lions.

What about this week’s challenge? It comes from Johanna Rossi:

Johanna Rossi Would Not Trade Her Job For Anything

Every time I see a photo of a Wall Street trading floor — people shouting maniacally, looking ecstatic or glum or whatever — I think: Wow. That’s a lot of testosterone. Where are the women?

Perhaps the only place with fewer females is an NFL locker room. Then again, they allow women reporters.

But Johanna Rossi is part of an exceedingly rare breed. The Westporter is a senior trader with Alden Global Capital.

She’s obviously at the top of her game. Traders Magazine just named her “Trailblazer of the Year,” in its “Wall Street Women Awards” issue.

At age 4, Traders says, her father taught her how to read stock quotes in the newspaper. She checked his portfolio daily.

Four decades later, she specializes in trading distressed securities. Now, though, she manages Alden’s domestic desk of approximately $1.8 billion in assets.

Her passion helped her overcome the perception that women could not be traders. After earning an MBA in corporate finance at Fairleigh Dickinson, she survived 12 interviews to land a job at NatWest Bank.

Rossi’s next job was as an international equity trader at Oppenheimer Capital. She joined Alden Capital in 2003. Today she handles “best execution in myriad asset classes such as U.S./international equity, U.S./international debt, program trading, forex, options and commodities.”

She loves her work so much, Traders says, “if she could trade washing machines, she’d do it.”

As part of her award, she will bang the gavel at the New York Stock Exchange. The date is December 26.

Uh-oh. The day after Christmas is by far one of the slowest trading days of the year.

You think they’d give that slot to a man?
